About Seattle Plen Air.

An Outdoor Painting Club for Artists In and Around Seattle.

Seattle artists have been meeting in groups to paint oudoors for years.

We are not an organized club, per se, with a president and organizational club meetings, and we are not a non-profit organization with bylaws. Maybe we will look into doing that in the future.

Where Do We Go To Paint?

Many of our artists have favorite subject matter, such as city parks, boats and marinas, barns, lighthouses, inner city urban scenes, or even sketching people in coffee shops and shopping malls.

Some of our more popular local locations to paint have been the following:

  • Fisherman's Terminal in Queen Anne
  • Gasworks Park on the north end of Lake Union
  • Lake Forest Park on the north shore of Lake Washington
  • University Of Washington Campus
  • Volunteer Park on Capitol Hill
  • Leschi Park on the west shore of Lake Washington
  • Seward Park on Lake Washington
  • Discovery Park in West Seattle
  • Carkeek Park

Some participants have expressed a desire to travel farther out of town, to other cities and rural areas, and have even suggested we stay overnight. So we will be exploring that in the future.

What Mediums Do The Artists Use To Paint?

Artists in our group seem to favor oils, but certainly not exclusively:

  • Oils
  • Acrylic
  • Watercolor
  • Ink and Watercolor
  • Sketching tools, such as pens, water brushes, markers, etc.
  • Pen and Ink, both black and colored inks.
  • Pencils, both graphice and colored pencils on sketchpads
  • Pastels

The trick is to travel light, and pick something that you can pack quickly and easily, although some of our artists do bring a lot of gear with them.

Drawing and painting outdoors can give you an excuse to try out a new medium you have never used before.

Skill Levels

We welcome artists of all skill and experience levels to participate.

The average skill level of our artists in our group is a bit difficult to qualify. They do range from very new beginners to VERY advanced. Many of our artists have been trained in art classes or art school, but for various reasons, have not been creating art for a while and they want to use painting outdoors as a reason to get back into practice. And some are people that are very new to making art, and just want to get out of the house and make new friends. Some are working professionals that make commercial art or digital art for their income but want to paint outdoors for fun in their time off.
